I still don't get why the plugins are installed into a cache folder, and 
treated as totally volatile items.

Using the Firefox Extensions analogy, Firefox stores these in a different 
location to the cache.

By default, the cache is C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application 
Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\...
and the downloaded extensions are in C:\Documents and 
Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Extensions\...

When you go into Firefox Tools > Clear Private Data, there are many things that 
can be cleared, but not Extensions - you have to go into Extensions to 
uninstall them, as they have nothing to do with the cache.

A similar setup for SqueezeCenter would seem very sensible, with the ability to 
change the default path to the plugins folder, which would be useful for 
development/testing.
