The way you present it, plus the fact I *never* used it, I think you
could deprecate the feature. Energy-wise, defer action may allow to
gain like 5-15 minutes of server idling (before its standard inactive
timeout.) I vote for doing away with it.

Switching and power state are indeed independent. On my system I
started switching the player off before switching it to SN since I use
IR-blaster.
In any case, the Json query for power status/on/off is very simple,
same as the CLI command.

BTW, would it be possible, and of general interest, to hook sending
some button commands at server shutdown/restart ? I'd use this to prime
my amp volume for alarms: server waking up before an alarm, "press"
volume down a very large amount of times to have it bump to 0, then
"press" volume up a few times to control the amp volume for alarms. 
Currently my alarms work, but they play at the volume I was playing the
night before, and that's usually lower than it should be in the morning
:)
