2: No, the plugin does not work independently of SqueezeCenter. There ought to be some power-saving features built into Ubuntu's gnome gui that will take care of general-purpose power saving for your server. SrvrPowerCtrl, on linux machines, is really designed to provide power savings extensions to SqueezeCenter.
