First of all: You hit the nail with your last post - I -was- assuming
that SqueezeIR could assign IR-commands to the buttons no matter where
in the interface you were, and that's why I couldn't get it working!

I have just tried the buttons from within the SqueezeIR menu and it
works! So, at least that problem is solved now!

Here is my take on your questions:

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they did. Yes, you would end up sending
a lot of superfluous IR-codes, which is not optimal, but then again,
there would probably not be any harm done.

If you can actually control the button behaviour independently on
different screens, I think you should make this a configuration issue,
so that users can make these decisions. Then again, I imagine that this
would require some kind of graphic UI in order to be usable. Maybe you
should just make the button behaviour global across all screens
instead?

I think you should definitely not mess with the default behaviour of
the buttons! Instead, SqueezeIR should add extra functionality to the
buttons.

I say no. Let the buttons do what they do, and then let SqueezeIR
attach some extra functionality.

That was my 2 cents.
