Then she entered the kitchen, seeing Derek already helping himself to the
new pot of coffee and looking like he had had very little sleep the night
before.  She felt bad because she knew she had been the reason and regarded
him for a moment as she chewed the corner of her bottom lip "Hi."

Derek:
Derek looked up at the sound of Julia's voice.  "Good morning," he said
giving her an appraising look.  She looked better, though she was still
pale.  "How are you feeling?"  He wondered if she would give him an honest
answer or not.  It would be like her to says she was fine when she wasn't,
it was things like that that got her into messes like the one she was in
last night.
