Have you read the "Expressions" section in the help file?
If not, I strongly recommend to read it first of all.
Actually the escape char in the above example is
one character \. You may use your own one like
esc("message:~na new line","~").
Here, both arguments separated by ',' should be expressions,
and strings in expressions should be enclosed with "" or
?c...c. You can find more detailed information in the help
file. If you really want to use just single character without
"" or ?+...+, then you might use numerics like
esc("message:8na new line",8)
but I can't guarantee anything in this case. :-)
