Before the poll about the Esc char, I wrote messages saying
that IMHO almost any character would be better than \.
I admit that ' had its problems but \ is even worse.

\ already appears frequently in parameters, far more often
than ~ or # or %.

Less than 2% of our 1000 members voted for \ and they won.

I believe my prediction that \ would cause a horrible mess of
problems has been proven correct. Ever since the change to \,
a large proportion of threads here have been about users'
problems switching to and using \.
It has caused problems in quoted literal paths of course
and also in using reg.dll and registry.dll because \ is used
between registry keys.

The ?c..c feature helps a bit, but only allows for a very local
switch to a more sensible esc char.

I think it would be better to allow ANY character to be
set as the global esc char in Setup, Advanced, Characters,
just like we can choose any character for "Expression in ()
follows".
However I guess that would be difficult to program so I
won't request it.

I can understand Ted's request for a new expression: esc()
which I think could be helpful in some situations.
So I am grateful to Bruce for agreeing to add it as a new
expression.
We need a variety of workarounds for the problems introduced with \.

Personally, I don't care too much if '+ or \+ stops working.
My editor has word wrap :-)

This thread, and many similar recent threads, would be
unnecessary if the Standard esc char was ~ for example.

The poll merely showed that 2% of our members were unable
to predict the consequences of using \ as standard for escape.

Choosing \ has caused a lot of unnecesary work for Bruce
and for users who have tried to change their configs
which has proven to be quite a job for some.
