not that is affects your 5300, but there's a link in the archives from about a month? ago, to a site that has pictures etc of the 1400 and where/what a guy used to chip it up a little bit.
the page itself had info on how to repair the CD drives by adjusting the focus of the laser beam, and that was the context in which it came up on the powerbook list IIRC. but details there might apply to the 5300 since they are both non-PCI powerbooks.
