Most of these little guys were originally designed as 14-pin DIPs or 8-pin 
DIPs.

The SMD alternatives are often just the same guts, but in a epoxy J-leaded 
package.

Unless they're using some new package, the lead grid is 0.1000" by 0.1000".

Or, you can think of it as being a 2.54mm by 2.54mm grid.

1.0000" is 2.5400cm, precisely.

Connectors intended for international use may have converted to a 2.00mm by 
2.00mm grid, but I believe ICs have not.
