OK, let's back up a bit to make sure we're not missing a point here.
You've got the 5300cs with no system right now? or do you have system 8 on there still?
When you try to boot from the CD you get what? does the drive spin-up? You are holding down the "c" key to boot from the CD?
You have termination accounted for on the little scsi chain?
The install cd you are trying to boot from does have an active system on it?
I know these questions are pretty rudimentary, I just want to be sure we all know
where you are on this problem.

I just can't get the CD Drive to be recognized by the computer. I'd be happy
to use it to do the update as I think it would be far easier. I have nothing
else to hook the CD too in order to verify it's fully functional so I'm
stuck at this point
