Depending on the amount of dust in the area (of the computer) you should blow out or vacuum your computer on a regular basis (by the book), On ElectroCom's Multiline II, high speed, 9 digit bar-code address ID printer and sorter ... the dorks in the New York main P.O. swept the floor with an air hose. ON the big "Current Technology" UninteruptablePwrSuply, they had opened the filter doors (the filters had clogged up). This forced the dust up into the unit, where the heat baked the dust on each electronic component into a nearly ceramic insulating covering. We were shipping these heavy SOBs back and forth like they were sweat socks. Since I have retired, I can say this, "The USPS promoted people for all the wrong reasons. Common sense, technical knowledge were not among them. So saying, when you encountered upper management persons ... 90% couldn't even boot up a computer. Not the brightest bulbs on the tree. In 1990, on the Multiline II Program, the USPS Contract; It called for the Guarantee of the "AVAILABILITY" of Replacement parts and Service ... for the DEC PDP 1183 Computers for a period of Twelve Years. Nothing would deter them (Like facts) and so that stipulation went into all the RFQ's and Subcontracts I wrote. Since this was on a four year build and delivery schedule ... As we had tried to warn them; Three years later, We negotiated up grading to a newer computer in the build specs and retrofitting all those in the field. Hmmm! Ever wonder why if, the USPS has spent 25 years and these billions of dollars automating and streamlining their operations to cut costs ... why the cost of stamps continues to increase faster than the rate of inflation? Hmmmm-II !
