The advice to use a supported machine is certainly sound. However, I ran OS X 10.1 through 10.2.1 on my PTP 200 with a G3 /400 ZIF using XpOSFacto and it worked just fine. Give it plenty of RAM, read Ryan's XpOSFacto FAQ's a couple of times, and have at it.

It's certainly an inexpensive way to try out OS X.
