The OS X vx. 9.x is as big a debate as mac vs. wintel. If you have been a mac user a long time, then you know that every os version has somewhat of learning curve to get to the new quirks and functionality. OS X is no different. From an Unix standpoint, its much easier to find freeware and open source material to run on osX than 9.x. There are tons of variables out there as far as linux goes on an old unsupported machine as well. I ran 10.1 on my Sonnet G3-400 Powerwave without any significant troubles (9.22 hack and OWC X hack). And as I stated before, 10.1 would run on a 604e 120Mhz with 64m of ram. How is that for unsupported? I can't count the number of daily restarts I have with 9.x (reminded me of wintel) but with X, if a program runs astray, the force quit gets it 99 percent of the time. I am a firm believer in buying an old machine to upgrade rather than the bleeding edge. I do everything from web design, QTVR, high end brochure design in photoshop and quark. I find X to be better in a 'production environment' than 9 ever was.

Great advice, everyone. I don't want to mess my computer hacking it to run
an unsupported OS. I want OS X for its stability :) I would also like to
run a few Unix programs. But the general consensus is that OS X isn't ready
for prime time yet *anyway*, so I'm not going to worry about it just now.
In the meantime, I will look into a Blue & White G3 to turn into a OS X
upgrade machine. I wonder though, what's so special about that particular
case, besides the low price? I love the color scheme, but that can't be why
it's so attractive as an upgrade machine. As for this guy here, I think I
can get most of the functionality of OS X (as far as Unix programs go) by
running Linux on it. At least Linux doesn't stop supporting machines every
time it comes out with a new version :)
