I have a PowerComputing PowerTower Pro 225 that I recently picked up. I love this machine; it's very nice. I would seriously like to upgrade it, however, because many pieces of Mac software now call for a G3 or G4 processor, and even more now call for OS X. I like Sonnet's upgrade CPUs and I'd like to buy one, but I read on Apple's website that OS X may not support upgrade CPUs. Have any of you managed to get OS X running on a PowerTower or other pre-G3 clone?
I'm also trying to get Apple Disc Burner working on my machine, with OS 9.1 and an IDE burner from LG. The download site on Apple says its only requirement is OS 9.1, which I have. But when I downloaded it the installer program said that it was "incompatible with my computer." Has this problem happened with any of you? Is it fixable or will I have to fork over $100+ for Adaptec Toast?
First and foremost, I would recommend that if your ultimate goal is to run OSX, *DO NOT* spend your time and hard-earned money trying to get it to work on an unsupported machine. There are no guarantees, and it may involve many hours of your time with no ultimate reward. (You would need to use XPostFacto if you wanted to try anyway.)
I would instead try to find a Blue and White G3, or any other machine with native USB support. Power On (http://www.poweron.com) has a great Blue and White G3 (Yosemite Rev. 2) sale which includes keyboard, mouse, hd, internal zip, 128mb RAM, and modem for $249. I bought one of these, replaced the hard drive with a bigger one, installed a G3/900 upgrade from OWC (http://www.macsales.com), added more memory, flashed a PC Radeon 7000 to work with Mac, and it works great. Yes, it even runs GarageBand from the new iLife '04. This machine also *screams* in OS9.
However, if you just want to use OS9 or earlier then the PowerTower Pro will work out great.
But once again, analyze what you really want your end result to be and then make an upgrade decision. I've wasted far too much time trying to get OSX working on my 7300s with G3 upgrade, and the results are unpredictable.

Amen, Brother James,
Mr. Grubic, heed these words of experience. You can waste hours, piddling with hack apps. In my experience, at best, you end up with something that locks up or Applicationsn that quit for no reason, aka, unstable.
For OS X get the blue & White. Better yet go with OS 9.1 and wait until OS X is a mature, stable, debugged system. Better than paying for 4 or 5 upgrades on the way ... at a C note per upgratde.
