Im glad somone has opened this can of worms.
I have been using a pentium 2 350 mhz (win 98) for 5 yrs now and it's
time for a new machine. Im temped to jump ship to a Mac but Im not 100%
sure if the old "macs are better for colour
management/graphics/calibration at system level" etc still applies now
windows xp is here, plus i have a lot of software and a library of 300
cd's with tiff and jpeg files on. Can anyone enlighten me? Most of my
work is for Advertising and Stock Libraries (need to retouch 100mb
files)

Dear Simon,

As I have just built sa new pc maybe I can give you some tips on what to
get and also micheal wilkinson has built himself a flying dual amd
machine for relatively not a lot.

Basically with regards to colour management, both mac and pc are on par
now, from what I understand. Windows xp pro is extremely stable and
hasnt crashed on me once in 6 months.

I am happy with windows and I dont enter into platform wars. Basically
is photoshopping is all you do and clients dont come in and want to see
a snazzy box then stay with a windows platform. However if you are
supplying quark files to printers with fonts etc, its best to go mac.
Either way theres not much in it apary from price, pcs being cheaper
pound for pound.

If you want me to give you some advice on building your own machine I
can advise otherwise www.overclock.co.uk will put it together for 41
and all you have to do is load the os, which is easy. Its up to you
whether you buy and oem version or retail version of windows xp as the
oem version offers you no support (not that I have had aproblem since
downloading all the updates, where as the reatil versio will allow
microsoft to poke around with the your files online if you have an
os/driver problem, but there is a 200 difference in price for the
privilage.

Please mail me off list for some advice as I'm sure I here some yawns
from the list. Well this list has turned me into a nurdy trainspotter,
for which I am most grateful.

Ps for got to add if you stock libraries are mac then go mac as there
will be file naming problems you will encounter and that could do your
head in.
