Having been a 100% PC user for a long long time, I recently purchased an
iMac G400. Whilst I would stress that this machine was really just for me to
get some experience with Macs and 'open my eyes' to some things I knew I was
missing out on, I'm afraid I've not been that impressed. I will admit that I
Dear Nij

I have much sympathy for you having been in the same position! The first Mac was a heap of problems but was not I am sure anything other than a bum machine, and the generous folk from this list were so supportive ...thanks guys! This had the advantage of learning quite a lot that would have remained hidden I suspect!

The second Mac, a more recent G4 has been as good as gold, however there are some operating frustrations coming from Win2K and swapping back and forth. The reason for the purchase of a Mac was to run a particular drum scanner software.

I find the file saving on a Mac (OS 9.2) really frustrating! When saving a sequence of files with just the end number changed such as, Joe bloggs scans 001, it seems one cannot simply select the starting file name and just change the number to say 002 and on up. You have to enter the whole thing each time! Apart from being inefficient, there is room for error and a subsequently 'lost' files. Perhaps I have missed a trick on this one. Yes the scanner software automatically gives a sequential number change (numbers only though), but most customers appreciate their own choice of file identification and numbering hence the difficulty.

Second I wish there was some way of checking the configuration of the SCSI card as we can easily do in Win2K. Perhaps things like this are not encouraged, but there is something comforting being able to actually check that everything is set correctly!

Third not being able to d. click the status bar and get a window filling the screen is a fuss though I seem to have read that there is a key modifier that does this...more to remember!

Forth is the inability to re-size windows from any side or top and bottom, but I do like the much easier to grab re-sizing area bottom right!

I am used to the 'in your face' information that Win2k gives whereas the Mac seems to be hidden from view! These are just my random thoughts.....no offence intended<G>

Cheers

Richard
