All the following is said as a Nikon shooter, currently using a Mac for NEF conversion. At present the bottleneck in my production is the NEF conversion. It is <VERY> slow. The figures quoted are also not the whole story. My software of choice is MacBibble and it can use Multi processors when present. Which means the fastest DP Mac I can buy, is thrashed by a laptop runing the fastest SINGLE processor Intel has to offer! As for multitasking the DP Mac is still beaten by the PC in most tasks. When machines running dual chips of this speed are available they will be faster still. The laptop is also cheaper! Another site with a less controled survey is at:- http://www.holterphoto.com/nefconv.html This is more what people in the real world are workinhg with. As for OS choices. I am now considering building a DP PC machine purely for the purpose of crunching NEF files. The Mac will stay for all other work. One final consideration is development. 3 years ago when I switched to a Mac there was a speed advantage in using Macs. You could get faster PC's, but they had a price premium. Now Mac's have the price premium, but lack the speed advantage. I would also be very interested in who is shooting RAW. I will put my name down for being 100% RAW. I only shoot jpeg when exposure and colour balance are not important. Your comments regarding RAW look to be written by someone with only a little experience of RAW shooting, and all its advantages. If I am wrong here I would be interested in your experiences, and how you came to your conclusion. The bottom line is, I love my Mac, but as I need to earn a living, I can not afford (too much) sentimentality.
