When measured against an F100 and a minolta meter it seems to be nearly
a stop and a half out.

Regarding the metering of the S2.... I'm curious...did you try the different
meter patterns? I had some interesting experiences with the S2 while
shooting some skiing photos recently. I was just sure that the bright snow
would cause me all sorts of problems, but in most situations, the meter set
on full matrix worked incredibly well... less good on the other settings.
Even when shooting backlit the metering was spot on, with just the right
level of highlight detail in the snow. The only time I had problems was
where there was something dark in the background such as a building or shed
which had some dark interiors creeping into the scene, then it would work
better with either the spot or center-balanced. I would think at a
gymnastics event you would have a lot of dark backgrounds where the seating
areas are not lit and perhaps the center-balanced setting might be better.
It's good that in this sort of situation, you can shoot some test shots and
look at the LCD screen zoomed all the way in and really tell what's going
on. (once you learn how to use the pan feature... duhh... took me a while)

I looked at the 70-200 lens at a store the other day... it looks like a
great lens and not toooo expensive for what you're getting, but I rarely
shoot the type of stuff that it would be good for. I still might buy it.
