Hi Paul

>> Compact Flash card from good old aus - its a 512Mb RiData. Trouble
is, the ixus doesn't seem to like it!

IMHO and based on what you've said, it sounds like it could be a
firmware issue on the Ixus itself. Some cameras have been known to ship
with dated firmware that doesn't support CF cards in excess of a certain
size generally because they did not exist when the camera was produced.
If the Ixus 400 is a 4mp unit as I think it is, it would blow a hole in
my theory because 4mp cameras have been around for around for at least
as long as 512mb CF cards but stranger things have been known to happen.

Have you tried any other demoninations (make or 512mb capacity) of a CF
card? What size is the card that shipped - I bet it was an inadequate 16
or 32mb? Canon supply downloads on their UK website but I'd suggest
checking out the US website, its far more up to date for firmware.
Different manufacturers use different controller architecture too, with
Lexar you can use their jumpshot device which allows the card to be read
from a microreader that Lexus sell, you can't use any other cards in
this due to the controller. A lot of the CF cards write to FAT16, maybe
another option would be to place the card in a CF reader and low level
format it in DOS to FAT16? Canon should make their architecture open
source because its not in their interest to restrict usage to their
products and RiDATA is a large producer..

Drop me an e-mail on private if you're still stuck to discuss.

Cheers

Alex
