Paul, I have used a Ridata 512Mb CF card in a Canon IXUS A400 and it worked fine. Then I read from it on a Mac G4 using a Lexar card reader. No problems. Formatted it, took pictures on it, used it in another camera. All fine.
You've got a faulty card.
