Hi

The precise compression depends on what is being compressed and different
programs do it slightly different ways (they also can implement the
'quality' value in varying ways)

Any repeated saving as a jpeg -will- lower quality, and given you are using
a half decent (:-)) camera in the first place why not use a lossless
compressed format like JPEG2000? The jpeg2k plugin is included with the PS
Raw plugin or from <http://www.fnordware.com/>

I only ever produce jpegs as a final product (where someone wants it that
way, or for web use) since once you start losing picture information it is
gone forever. After getting a really good shot for web use and then being
asked for a big print - I never use jpeg on the camera. The additional
card/disk storage is not exactly expensive these days... :-))

bye for now
