I don't remember that being the case, scientifically. The grades need to be measurable, yes, but noticeable, that depends on how hard you are looking. > If you can't even notice the grades of difference, then how can > you grade it as "degraded?" I seem to remember you demonstrating that the steps "could" be seen (you gave a method of demonstrating this very fact). Its just that normally you won't be able to see them. Are you saying that just because you can't see something, its not there? > Well, that really is your definition of the word. In my book (backed up by > the Oxford English Dictionary and Robert Robinson, no less), if you can't > see a difference, it's not DE-graded. Does the Oxford English really say this? Does it not differentiate between the terms "visible degradation" and "degradation". I can't believe that. I haven't got a copy of the big OED so can't check. My humble version certainly makes no mention of the fact that the amount has to be a "visible" one, just that it has to be an amount. Amounts surely come in various sizes, not all visible. If something is to degrade, it must surely be by a measurable amount, not necessarily a visible amount. Paul PS - I you stick a blind man in front of your monitor, and he messes up you image (degrades it) he won't see a visible difference.
