after running several utilities including Apples Disk Utility, Disk Warrior and even a quick look by Nortons ( who would have merrily discarded half of all my missing data, if I had gone along with it's suggestions!) finally Tech Tool Pro came up trumps! With Rods help, Tech Tool Pro was able to mount the damaged disk, and then we were able to save off the data, phewww!!
The drive is still quite damaged with bad blocks and i think i was very lucky indeed to get any data off at all - some data was lost, but thankfully all my important stuff was saved.
I certainly have learned a valuable lesson here, the scary part about all of this was that I was totally unaware that there were any problems with my computer at all until it was almost too late! - the experience will stay in my mind for some time to come I should think.
