Kirsty. Go to the Western Digital web site and download their disk tools.
You will need to install them on a floppy or on a CD if your computer does not have a
floppy.
Boot from the floppy or CD and you will be able to run a full diagnostic of the drive 
and
probably restore it to working standards.
There is also a utility for copying the drive to another which I have used 
successfully.
