Kirsty, There might be one last chance for data recovery which is to send the disk to a data recovery specialist. After all you could pretty much guarantee that if you had something on your disk that the police were interested in they would no doubt be able to find it, you don't do you ;-)
I apologise if this solution has already been suggested but I haven't followed the thread. Try entering 'data recovery service' or 'disk recovery service' in a web search engine.
