I must admit to not having followed this thread closely, but you are
referring to the Pixl test image (nice bum in the top left corner, a watch,
landscape, couple of portraits, couple of commercial shots, a yellow Volvo,
a park seen from above and a colour grad at the bottom)?
This particular image (images) have been prepared by myself and most of the
images are adjusted to just barely be within gamut of a Euroscale CMYK (ISO
12647-2, Fogra 1 dataset - incidentally Adobe's Euroscale Coated v.2 is
derived from this dataset). Maybe 8-12% of the colours are out of Gamut of
this printing method. The exception being the spectrum gradation at the
bottom of the image which pretty much hugs the gamut boundary of Adobe RGB,
and therefore is WAY out of gamut in most areas.

If the main part of the image shows up as being out of gamut you have
probably selected a somewhat smaller output space in your proof setup,
willingly or unwillingly.

If you disregard the Spectrum, I'd say about 85-90% is WHITIN gamut (of
Eurocale Coated v2). If you see something different then you've gotten hold
of an image which have been tweaked by someone else, or your printer profile
has a gamut which no one will envy...

It will be reduced somewhat of course, but whether my perception of
"tremendous" is akin to your definition is hard to say. It's like trying to
accurately describe the softness of a pillow with words...

Try to download a fresh version of the Pixl testimage from www.pixl.dk or
www.colourmanagement.co.uk and see if it's similar to the version you have.
If it is, try and make a gamut warning using Euroscale Coated v2 as the
simulation (gamut boundary) profile.
If you still see 85% of the image (excluding the spectrum) out of gamut you
have a problem with your system...
