Hi Jay and Shangara, Thanks for your posts. That was an interesting exchange of views. Anyway I digress :
Shangara said >> David, apart from different OS's, you are also using different machines, so >> I wouldn't conclude from that that it's the OS X that's at fault. More, >> ummm, scientific testing is needed... OK - I became a little more "scientific' and got a 3rd party CD drive (La Cie FW 52x24X52) and plugged it into the OSX machine. Hey presto ! Files opened no problem. I feel very silly not to have thought of this before. My apologies ! But that does leave me with the nagging question...Has anyone got any idea why the internal CD drive as supplied by Apple is so flakey at opening a few, but by no means all of its own 'masters' CD's, and yet a third party drive can open the same CD's on the same OS and computer with no worries. As an aside, my office is getting clogged with old gear I cannot get rid of 'just in case' I need it to open some file or use a programme or bit of hardware that is not supported (but definitly should be, as in this case) with the, cough, latest and greatest offering for the 'digital generation'.... (Yawn). So now do I have to add to this pile of metal and plastic a third party CD burner 'just in case' I need to open the 'odd CD' burnt in OS9.2.2 on my OSX machine ? Is this not going too far ?
