I've been following this thread with a great deal of interest. I think my situation in spite of my best efforts may be one that to an extent is not helping matters.
I work mainly in the editorial magazine market which since I started 15 years ago has been successfully using film with very good results. All through the system are people who know their job from photographers, designers, scanners and printers. We now have a situation where digital is readily available but I am finding a lack of knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for it. This doesn't come from the photographers but further down the process. The photographers I know are all seeking out information wherever possible to improve the digital use. We are in a situation where we some magazines ask for only digital and then some ask for some digital and some film depending on the subject and eventual use on the page. Most of magazines require all the pictures taken, (as they would get with film) so they can then edit to their requirements. As photographers, we would jump at the opportunity to just provide them with the pictures they eventually use as CMYK with all the necessary corrections. It's impossible to devote the time to go through 300-500 pictures from a shoot manly because of time but also the costs involved. Therefore we have to submit everything we have taken and hope the designers or repro houses do half decent conversions. I have every sympathy with press photographers (mentioned in the first email on this subject, which I can't locate) who just photograph the subject then pass the pictures over without any input themselves. In an ideal world I'm sure we would all want to hand over the final completed images to our satisfaction but there are always going to be factors which don't allow this. That said it is not a reason to sit back and do the bare minimum but more a reason to learn as much as possible about the use of digital. If nothing else I can then pass on advice to my clients so they can make moves to get the best results possible. Maybe I can persuade some key people on the magazines I work for to join me on a training course and then we can all move forward together.
