Thank you to everyone for your thoughts. It's good to know that I'm thinking
in the right way and not just being a luddite. I was very interested by Kevin's
comment below. Since Kevin is a member of the BIPP I assume he is in a
position to know this as fact. Also, looking at Kevin's website, which is really
good, I can see why one would choose to use digital for this kind of work. It
is a case of right tools for the job.

Someone else asked 'why did I think I needed to go digital'. Good point!
retouching and image manipulation have to be up near the top, I spend
roughly 6000 per year on film and processing and shooting colour and B/W
means carrying a lot of equipment; shooting digital would half the weight.

However, I think the question should be 'How will shooting digital benefit
my clients?' I know some photographers provide brides with DVD's instead
of proof books. All very trendy but I see no benefit there compared to a nice
leather bound album with a set of proof prints. The other issue is the 'look'
of the image. I have shot film next to digital and they definately different. Is
this the same as records VS CD's or movies VS video.

One last point. When I shoot a portrait it is on film and printed by hand on
heavy weight fibre paper like Forte polywarmtone etc.; something I love
doing and would miss. Is there a way of achieving this kind of quality with
digital. I have looked at Gyclee but this is just another inkjet process.

Cheers,

Matt Faber.

You might be interested to know that the BIPP receives more complaints from
the public about wedding photographers who shoot digitally more than
anything else.
The top wedding photographers who shoot digitally tend to employ someone to
do the computer work.
There is now a trend that digital wedding photographers are going back to
film for exactly the reasons you are concerned about.
