Matt,
Many of the points you make are valid.
See my related posting on just these issues under: "[PRODIG] introduction &
capture advice" that I and others made recently.
So far as the D100 and its TTL ability, even with the proper Nikon flash
units I have heard of others having problems- Canon is even less sorted in
this respect.
The D70 I am "playing" with as a trial has astonished me with its accuracy
using the Nikon SB800 flash. 1/500 sec flash sync and the wireless flash
sync works well except for some people blinking on the metering preflash in
dim conditions. I need to use larger units, Metz CT60's etc and have only
had success with manual settings. This actually works quite well as the
instant previews with highlight clipping and histograms allow you to setup
quickly. Don't discount the preview abilities! With medium format and even
35mm film my output and quality of work/ lighting refinement is
substantially up whilst my usage of Polaroid has dropped to near 0. (Only
when a client wants to play with cropping and framing).
I agree with you regarding workflow, as being the biggest hiccup in the
whole process. I have already turned down work because I was too busy in
post production to meet deadlines.
I have actually asked at my Pro Lab and a few semi Pro minilabs working with
digital equipment(Melbourne, Australia) regarding RAW file processing as a
service to photographers, but nobody seems interested! "Maybe in a year or
so". I would not have a problem paying a reasonable fee for something like
this as it would allow me to get back to being a Photographer! And not a
programmer, retoucher, system engineer, filing clerk/archivist etc etc.
Are there any businesses out there handling this sort of stuff/ fee for
service postproduction, output in choice of colour space, format, and level
of USM along with preview thumbnail proofs and possibly prints
10x15cm/13x18cm, when required?

Regards,
Frank Styevko from OZ
