Hi Folks This one has got me beaten .....
When retouching images I usually make area adjustments to brightness/contrast as follows :- 1.) Lasso selection, large feather - say 200 pixels in a 4800 px x 7200 px image. 2.) Adjustment Layer - either Levels / Brightness & Contrast / Curves. 3.) Build up the effect with multiple layers - 2 or 3 - to achieve the desired effect. Not original I know, the technique is from the Martin Evenings books. Problem is that when I do that now I can see very nasty stepping along the edges of the feathering on screen and when printed 20"x16", on Epson 7600, the effect is to give "steps" of about 5mm. It is visible in both pale sky tones, concrete and roadways - mid to dark tones. Even shows in deep blue skies and grass areas. I've checked older jobs where I've used this technique - no problems. I've checked scanned film images and digital captures currently on the system and it happens when I work on any of them. For reference I have tried this on 3 machines, PC running XP, 2 - 3 GB Ram, Separate Scratch Disks, max file size 197MB. Cannot figure out what has changed, though I have searched through settings etc. Tend to keep all systems configured the same, so presume that what ever is wrong we have "copied" to all the machines ..... or is this "operator error?" Any suggestions gratefully received before I remove the last of my hair.
