If you are working in 8 bit , then convert to 16 bit before doing these changes, it allows many more steps in tone and the bands will no longer be so apparent. I have noticed this in grayscale images, particularly burning in skies or corners of even tone.
If you are already working in 16 bit then I don't know.

Not original I know, the technique is from the Martin Evenings books.
Problem is that when I do that now I can see very nasty stepping along the
edges of the feathering on screen and when printed 20"x16", on Epson 7600,
the effect is to give "steps" of about 5mm.
