Wake up Whil. It's noon and your dreaming again. They don't know about
them because you’re doing a good job and they are clueless. Now are you
just as much clueless?
Well, no, it's just because we're running Linux on all of our boxes.
I've had to explain to them why we're using Linux and not Windows (like
all of their friends are). Occasionally I get screamed at because
<something> doesn't run on our computer like it does on <name of
friend>. But tough. We don't have a PS2 or xbox in the house either.
They'll live.
How well are your strengths at protecting your kids from the evils of the
social networks? Are you aware that they could be providing their school
names, areas of personal interest and funny pics of themselves and others
today?
No! Say it ain't so! :)
We're one of those old-fashioned families that eats dinner and has
conversations most nights of the week. This week, dinnertime chatter has
included the usual first day of school stuff, the explanation of the
"sudo get me a sandwich" cartoon that's been making the rounds (and is
on our frig :)), how hard the swim team practices are, Pluto being
downgraded, Steve Irwin, and, of course, #44 being discovered.
So, yeah, we've had chats about MySpace, discussions about why we don't
IM in our house, and what the rules of the road for cell phone use is.
Some of this is beyond our 4 and 6 year olds, but they hear the general
'tone' and we explain, in simpler terms, when it is appropriate.
It's a whole lot harder to control what is going out of your network today
then what is coming in.
I had a friend bitch at me about a joke I sent her that she took too
seriously ("It-was-a-joke"), scolding me "Don't you know about all the
sexual predators out there?" I suggested that perhaps better parenting
might be in order. Why would she give her teen daughter a computer and
not explain how to 'use' it? She wouldn't give her teen son a chainsaw
without instructions, right? With attitudes like that, they need to stop
peeing in the gene pool.
OK, this is WAY off topic now. :) I agree, it's a BIG challenge to keep
tabs on your kids. In the 50s, they were behind the bleachers smoking
cigarettes and trying to feel up Susie. In the 70s it got uglier. Now
technology makes it easier, in some cases. But that's no different than
blaming a company for mis-use of the boatload of computers they just
bought but don't have a plan for. The CEO just wanted to have more
computers than his golf buddies.
