I have never seen Windows 2000, XP, or 7 experience a "forced update" when automatic updates is turned completely off (I've never seen Vista do anything, thank goodness ;)). It may not be enough to change it from "automatically update" to "tell me if I have updates and ask me if I want them"--though I don't know that for sure since I"ve never used that option. I just turn it completely off and manually update what, and when, I want.
