MS can do it again any time they want. And actually, it seems like they 
sort of did (supposed to notify user before install, but the message didn't 
appear).

The crux of the issue is that you cannot trust MS to regulate itself, and I 
doubt you can protect yourself from MS with just software measures on the 
machine in question. You're going to have to rely on other external 
hardware/software for that. Remember, if things really start to look bad 
for MS market share, etc, they'll just start whacking anyone with competing 
software on the computer (claiming it's not "trusted" of course). Oh, and 
don't forget, this is all within their "legal" right according to their 
license statement.

Of course, you could write your own app to monitor all files on the PC, but 
then the damage'd be done by the time you recognized it anyway.
