>>Paying for something already built into your OS is even sillier.<<

In principle I agree David. If the OS has the functionality I need I use it.
but as is the case with
many things in the OS, the functionality with respect to compressed files is
not as strong as
WinZip. I can literally right-click in PowerDesk (I really don't intentionally
use Windows Explorer
unless something is really wrong) and can have a ZIP file with two clicks with
the ZIP file name the
same as the folder or original file. I can extract quickly to a most recently
used folder list.
Windows does not do this with compressed folders. Heck, I cannot even unzip the
file to a specific
location. WinZip is even superior in functionality to PowerDesk's built in ZIP
functionality. So I
don't consider buying WinZip with XP to be silly.

Buy it, or use the significantly better WinRAR, which is free and can be set
up to handle ZIP files. Or, just used the 'compressed file' context menu
item within XP and Vista, which reads and writes ZIP files all day and comes
with your OS. Paying for something when better, free alternatives are
available is silly. Paying for something already built into your OS is even
sillier.

pay for such a basic utility will find one of the many free alternatives and
switch to that.<<

This is where I disagree Ed. People are using it, will continue to use it,
and are not looking for alternatives. "Basic" is relative in this case. I
see a ZIP utility as extremely necessary to operate in the computing world,
and thus it is not basic. Required is a way better description. They already
like WinZip as the best thing and won't bother looking around. They are
getting the older version (or continuing to use the older version) and
violate the licensing agreement 10 times a day.
Period. But obviously from past discussions you don't see this as cheating
or stealing so I won't go down this road again.

Cheapskates not paying $30 for simple and required utility are stupid.
Anyone who can afford US$400 for a computer can afford US$30 for a critical
utility. If you want free, go get a freebie. If you want WinZip, pay for it.
