I always created a directory called "dls" that I set as my default
download location. Icons on the desktop have a small but measurable
performance hit on OS X.
Leopard by default creates and uses a 'Downloads' directory. While
this is an improvement over using the Desktop folder, it sucks at the
command line, as I now have to type *3* characters to get completion!
