There's a designated penalty for fighting, so yes, it's a part of the 
game.  And boxing...are they just "thugs" too since it's just fighting?

Mario Lemieux and/or Wayne Gretzky last decade wanted the NHL to outlaw 
fighting so that if you did, you were ejected from the game.  That's the 
only way to combat that part of the game....but many many fans actually 
like that part of the game.  They must be thug-like fans themselves, eh?
