When you mention the Acer surviving overheating, I am assuming it was a
human instigated event, where perhaps the laptop had vent holes on the
bottom that were blocked while on somebody's lap? I know I ran into that
with a friend's daughter's Toshiba - a very high end Toshiba. She told me
the laptop would shut down on its own, and would not restart for a while,
and after restarting would shut down by itself very shortly afterward. I
ran it all night long on top of a desk, and had it processing some very
intense programs just to get the CPU buried and put off max heat. It never
missed a beat. I then looked underneath, and sure enough, lots of venting
slots were on one side, in a perfect position to get blocked with pants or a
skirt. When she picked up the unit I told her the laptop could not be
fixed, waited for the long face, then told her the human using it had to be
fixed. She was astounded, but when I called a week later to see how it was
running she said it never shut down after that, and she was being very
careful to not block the vent holes.
