Actually, there is another solution. Right now it is a bit tricky to 
control the hidden/visible values of the various part fields. That should 
be fixed, though it is workable as it is.

The point is that the "type" field *is* the comment field. Whatever you 
want to go into the PCB comment field, put it in the type field of the part 
on the schematic. But that field can be hidden, and another field, made 
visible (this can be set under default primitives), becomes the identifying 
type.

As I said, Protel could make this easier by allowing better control over 
default primitives (I could find no way to make the type field hidden by 
default; it *is* possible to globally edit all type fields to hidden.)

Fly in the ointment: the type field is hard-coded into the BOM, but one can 
add additional fields to the BOM as desired. If one is using off-line, 
spreadsheet manipulation of the BOM, it is simple to include what one wants 
and exclude what is unnecessary.

We have already suggested that Protel give us better control over BOM 
formatting....
