I do that quite often and find it good for the task.
I generally have two PCB files in Protel. One is the board proper 
and the other is the empty Array with tooling holes, etc.
I Gerber them both, step & repeat in Camtastic and then merge in 
the array outline. I then use the Camtastic fab drawing function and 
DXF export. A few tweeks of the dxf and a bit of cut & paste and 
it's done.

I agree with Brad though, about merging different boards. What a 
pain. It would be really useful to be able to tell it to put everything 
with a specific filename extension onto a single layer.
The other thing that doesn't transport across is which holes are 
plated and which aren't.
