You are correct. Unfortunately in windows programming, when allocation ram for
storage, you can define system ram only, any memory available, and you may also
define swap file ram as preference. It's these type of programs which may cause
problems.

Playing with the ramdisk, making a 1.25gig ramdisk for swap file, 750mb of the
remaining ram as standard system, I got the following improvement.

(Quartus II building an almost 1 million gate PLD)

3 gig swapfile on HD, standard 2gig system memory : compile time = 1hour, 12 minutes.
1.25 gig swapfile in ramdisk, remaining 750mb system memory : compile time = 38
minutes.

No swapfile, 2 gig system memory : Out of system resources after 5 minutes.

In WinXP, there is a registry setting to not use the swap file at all, and swap
within any available system memory. Unfortunately, it's buggy.

| Seems to me that this somewhat defeats the purpose of the swapfile, and may
| be less effective than eliminating the swapfile altogether with this much
| RAM.
|
| Unless there is a problem with the OS (despite warnings) not having any
| swapfile defined. If this is the case, that the ramdisk is just a way of
| getting around this OS shortcoming, at the price of some performance and
| capacity (compared to no swapfile).

| I also found a way to get your system to perform even better, take a look at

|
| Use their ramdisk software to put your swapfile in a ramdisk. No more seek

| all. No HD access...
| Take a look at the SuperSpeed...
