I tried adding leading apostrophe & zero on footprint ('0603), in client
spreadsheet, and File | Update sets the footprint field without the leading
apostrophe. Or is the problem that there's no automatic way to know which
items had zeros removed?

If there are only a couple footprints like this, you could just do global
edit when you're done with update, 805=>0805, etc.
