Just to be more clear about this, as another writer mentioned, an SMT component might have, for example, a through hole for a guide pin. If that through hole is implemented with a "via," instead of a "pad", it would not cause ambiguity.


However, another, perhaps more practical and safer alternative would be to generate three lists: SMT, through-hole, and possibly mixed. The large majority of components would orginarily not be ambiguous.
