Hi Group!
I just printed gerbers from Protel99SE and looked then with CamTastic. Pictures in Silk-Pad_Pictures.zip at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/protel-users/files/junk/ tells you what I saw.
How should I set my settings in Cam Manager (in Protel99SE) to get correct shapes of SMD pads and SILK circles?
I suppose you have the option "software arcs" enable in the gerber generation. Turn it off if you really bothered about it. But be aware, there may come some zero radius arcs into the gerbers.
As for the pads, protel can't draw with an octagonal aperture, so it replaces it with a round aperture.
Anyway, avoid octagonal pads!!
There is (or was??) a problem with the rotation of octagonal apertures. Protel doesn't follows the gerber specifications. Serch in the archives for octagonal pads, there was a discussion some time ago.
