Is gmail a real web application? As others have mentioned, Google isn't using GWT for gmail, in fact, according to this article Google is NOT using GWT for *any* of its online AJAX applications:

The article is a bit old, so maybe they've started using it now, who knows, the fact is that they clearly were able to build a real web application with ZERO GWT. If you're trying to make website for real software apps, maybe you should consider why Google isn't using GWT itself?
