Everything depends on the application, how it is mounted, the location and protection. Most would install the 12 volt socket and attach it to one battery as 24 volts dc would ruin or destroy most 12 volt products. Immersion heaters draw big amps and not just volts. I would expect to lose about 15% of your battery life . Back up power for a cell phone is a good idea as long as you don't use it all of the time.
