Subject: Quantum Fireball 1280s Hard Disk problem
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a Q605, 36 MB Ram, and an Ethernet card and I
want to replace the HD with a new Quantum Fireball 3.5
Series 1.2 gig Model 1280S SCSI Hard Drive I got from
eBay. I can't seem to do it. Does this HD work with a
Q605?

It didn't come with any software or literature but I
was able to find the jumper settings on the web.

I am not sure if I need to have termination enabled or
not. I have an external CD-ROM hooked up. I tried it
both ways but it didnt make any difference.
I don't think that is my problem though. I think the
problem is that (Im guessing) it is formatted HFS+.
When I try to boot from a OS 7.1 Disk Tools disk, I get
the message that it's the wrong System for this
computer. Huh? It works fine with my old HD. When I
insert my OS 8.1 CD, I boot up fine but Drive Setup
will only recognize the CD-ROM.

Running off my CD, I was able to stick a OS 7.1 Disk
tools disk in the floppy drive and run Drive Setup but
still no recognition of the HD. I have tried Drive
Setup 1.7.3, HD SC 7.3.5(with and without the ResEdit
modification for non-Apple Drives). No luck. I was able
to fit ScsiProbe 4.3 on the floppy and that sees the HD
as ID 0, and my CD_ROM as ID 6. Thats what I want to
see so I know I dont have a SCSI conflict. I tried
fitting Lido 7.56 on the floppy but it wont fit. I was
able to put the init in the extensions folder but there
wasnt enough room for pMount. I tried it anyway and it
scanned. It sees my CD_ROM as ID 6 but shows ID 0
empty. I get the message "Inquiry and request auxiliary
sense commands failed."

I would like to be able to run TENON Intersystems
Professional Mach Ten 2.3 (so I dont have to partition
the HD; It runs as an application within the Mac OS),
with either full OS 7.1 or preferrably OS 8.1 for its
Internet capability.

Any ideas? TIA.
====================================

O.K., Ive been very busy with my other life and
following up on all the leads I got from the pickle,
Raf (Rafael Hinojosa, Dave Deckert, and Mark Benson.

This is how things stand now.

I checked for correct enabler on Disk Tools

I went to Gambas site
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/ and downloaded
various Sys 7 Superbooters but to no avail. Same
problem I had earlier with my Sys 7.1 disks with update
3.0. I never did get the teach Text file titled "Where
have all my files gone?" Only OS 8.1 would boot. Could
I have corrupted the Gestalt ID while running HD SC
7.3.5(with the ResEdit modification for non-Apple
Drives)? I didnt know it was possible to alter the
Gestalt ID until I read about "Wish I Were" on this
board.

I ran TechTool v1.1.7 and it showed Gestalt ID 94 and
nothing out of the ordinary except it didnt show my
hard drive. By now I realized the drive didnt have an
Apple ROM (Im slow but when I bought it on eBAY, the
seller said he had pulled it from a 7200) and that I
would have to get FWB Hard Disk Toolkit as suggested by
Raf. Further research led me to believe v2.0 was what I
could use so I checked eBAY. Lo and Behold, they had
one (4 floppies and 2 manuals) for $7.99 + shipping. I
took a chance and am waiting for it to arrive. Since I
have 3 Q605s with 250MB HDs, it might come in handy.
Which brings me to TENONs MachTen for 68040s.
http://www.tenon.com/. They are running a closeout sale
now for $99.
Now Ill answer Rafs question and talk a little
further about my *nix dilema. I thought about MachTen
because they dropped the price and it comes with 2
manuals. I thought it would be the least headachy way
for me to transition to *nix, as I know squat about it
except what Im able to read about it. I also liked the
idea of the integration with the Mac OS. All of the
drivers for the peripherals would work because they use
the Macs and I can inter operate across files.

One of the Q605s I bought came with NetBSD 1.4.3 and a
stripped Sys 7. I tried to use it but I couldnt find
Vi or text utilities. That seems incomprehensible to me
but probably I dont know what I am doing. It is the
only Apple branded HD I have and I think it is too
small at 250MB. What do I know? Since no disks came
with it, I went to http://www.macunix.net:8000/ and
bought Erics packaged NetBSD 1.4.2. I havent tried it
yet because I wanted a larger HD but I did find out
that support for portrait monitors didnt come until
1.4.3. Bummer because thats what Ive got and I really
dont want any more crt monitors to clutter up the
place. Too much junk and not enough money. Since I
dont know how to download, configure, build etc.
1.4.3, Im on hold with that. Thats the other reason I
wanted to give MachTen a try but I needed a larger HD.

This update has risen to the level of rambling so I
will end now. But the saga continues. I will post again
once I get my 1 Gig HD formatted.
