Thanks Nigel. I'll give it a go. I had a moment of clarity after I had posted the question and shut down the flaptop. In order to take the pedal box out I would have to disconnect the master cylinder - not so easy after all.
I shall put the head of domestic support on standby and get stuck in! (hopefully not literally...)
