You have to select your USB key as the first boot option in your BIOS menu. Alternatively, invoke the boot selection menu during boot, and choose your USB key. If you want to make sure the disk is empty, you can simply zero-fill it, e.g., # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX where sdX is your disk. (Make sure not to select just a single partition on the disk, but rather the whole disk.) There are also other methods, like ATA Secure Erase (hdparm).
